Verified Purchase. Do I have my issues with the season? Sure, it has flaws but it still had me completely gripped from start to finish and I found the finale to be a nice little bow on top. The set itself is absolutely beautiful. I was quite surprised at the size and weight of it and just sort of stared at it in awe for quite a while.
Looking forward to watching the additional special features and they also threw in the animated Conquest and Rebellion film to explain the history of Westeros. First episode I stuck on was The Long Night which looked and sounded amazing it is not too dark!!!

I can't help but admire A Game of Thrones. Seriously, the amount of work that has visibility gone into the creation of this book, the plot and the characters is beyond belief. It's truly a colossal piece of literature, and not just in length. Even if you dislike this book with the burning rage of a thousand dragons, you have to take a moment to admire the pure skill it has taken to create A Game of Thrones.
The world Martin has created is brilliantly crafted. The characters are individual and strong. But with A Game of Thrones, each story is just fantastic in it's own right. In my personal opinion, I did naturally like some more than others. Characters like Bran and Catelyn Stark annoyed me for different reasons and I never truly enjoyed their parts as much as others, and ended up skim-reading parts of theirs. I much preferred Daenerys for her strong-heartedness and amazing character development; Sansa for the difference and change of character in comparison to the rest; and Tyrion for his sarcasm.
I did enjoy Jon's storyline a lot though, but I didn't feel like his POV had the same level of engagement compared to the aforementioned characters. But all this is very personal. With eight individual POVs, it's almost guaranteed there is at least one character to suit every reader. And even if there isn't, Martin has created many, many more characters than that inside his story!
I felt like, despite the novels length, the pacing was actually quite good! I was scared that it would drag a lot because with over pages, it's hard to stay on the story and keep things moving without getting off tangent. But Martin managed, for the most part, to keep the story flowing well. Nearing the page mark, I was getting a little restless, but the last few chapters really make up for any slowness. The last chapter, in particular, brings the whole book to a sweet, well-deserved finished.
As I've watched the HBO television show before actually reading this book, I can't judge it much on the plot twists. Nothing was new to me, really, as the TV adaptation follows it really well, but that didn't stop it from being interesting. So if you're thinking of reading this because you love the show, I recommend that you totally do it. Although there wasn't anything new to me in this book, it still was wholly fun and engaging to read. It was also amazing to build up images of the characters and compare it to the cast of the TV show Who knew Robb Stark was ginger?!
This book is super political, but it also has wars and raging bloodthirsty men and strong women and death and amazing epic fantasy-ness and just craziness each and every page.
I'm pretty excited to keep reading this series, but A Clash of Kings is so super looooong, I'm probably gonna faint when I pick it up. If I physically can pick it up, that is But whatever. Westeros is such a cool world And I wanna be there when it finally hits. Reading the book long after watching the TV series has been an enjoyable experience. It was pleasant to read that very little is different, but the book is yet more detailed, more rich in character development and thought.
We get to see the inner thoughts and individualities of the main cast. What struck me the most, however, was the tactical and strategic storyline really brought to the fore. Intense, well thought out and heavily researched in a military sense gave my mind a work out. Being a behemoth of a novel, I couldn't put certain parts down.
